Nowadays, mass media is purely advertisement. The real news is suppressed information. The harsh effect of the secrecy: for most people, no news is beneficial and for mass media, good news is detrimental.

News allows us to be updated about all the happenings and events around us. Contrarily, this is the same news that sometimes takes a toll over our minds. Most news channels portray news in an unrealistic manner.

Sadly, whatever might be the situation around the world, the news tends to fit few thin, portable sheets of paper.

News: helpful or detrimental? Or both?
The Helpful and Detrimental Nature of News

“Not everything we hear is the truth, it is just an opinion. Not everything we see is the reality, it is just a perspective.”

HOW NEWS HELPS
Giving Voice to the Voiceless

From reporters bringing us stories of people in difficult situations to social media allowing one person’s thoughts to go viral, mass media can lift up an individual voice that would otherwise have gone unheard.

Staying Updated

Today, we all know who said what about everything. This is possible because of the widespread reach of news. We know different cultures, histories et cetera, due to news.

Mass media communication makes it possible for us to know the situation of everything across the globe. Knowing the news around you is knowing the world around you.

Using Technology Productively

Due to immense growth of technology and digitalization, people of all age-groups are heavily reliant on websites like Facebook and Twitter. From this, they get their daily dose of international updates.

News channels are seen investing in mobile applications to provide timely updates to the readers. This leads to awareness and education.

THE DETRIMENTS
Propagating Half-Knowledge

Skimming through the headlines in our notification bars alone creates a false sense of security. Furthermore, it portrays faux-intelligence in a social gathering. Generally, we tend to say, “Hey, I know that censored movie!” However, how often to we read the article to find out why?

In addition, the ego-boost that half-read news provides can propel people to greater levels of entitlement. Moreover, this entitlement can lead to sharing of harmful and insensitive opinions.

Encouraging False Empowerment

While mass media creates opportunities for anyone to share their story, said media is generally corrupted. Due to this, money can deeply influence what the media propagates. This gives the rich and powerful a louder voice than the rest of us. Firstly, the non-equality is unfair. Secondly, the power-imbalance is problematic, especially when people look to news for bare facts.

As a result, this stimulates mental unrest in the life of struggling people, daily-wage workers and the unprivileged mass.

Spreading Misinformation and Hate

How do you know what you’re seeing or hearing in the news is true? While some sources of information are far more trustworthy than others, mass media is vulnerable to lies. For instance, totalitarian regimes have used mass media to control people’s beliefs.

In summary, the mental unrest created by this misinformation can cause many health problems in the long run.

Replacing personal connections

A group dinner where people spend the evening staring at their phones is not uncommon. News can form helpful outer connections, but it can be detrimental for our personal ones.

In summary, it is good to stay updated via news. News has always stood for unbiased sharing of facts. It has its roots in awareness and freedom of speech. However, news has grown to be detrimental over the years, with its helpful bits being overshadowed by the power of money.

Irrespective of what the news says, it is important to stay informed logically about any topic with enough research and conviction. Because what we say and believe has an impact on people, we should be cautious of false theories.
